Clif just got off of the phone with the Eureka Swim Coach who asked to cancel due to the forecasted weather.

Swim Team Update 6/30

Hi! Great job at the Pontiac Pentathlon on Saturday, June 28! Lexington received 2nd place behind Pontiac! Great job, Lakers!!! As soon as I get the results, I will email them to you!

Just as an FYI - we have a "big" meet vs. Clifton on July 10. The reason I say "big" is #1 Clifton asked us last year if they could come to our pool to swim us, #2 Clifton is bringing all of their swimmers on a bus to swim against us, #3 Clifton has been looking forward to this meet all year as they normally swim smaller teams and are anxiously awaiting some real competition (Clifton got 3rd in Pontiac!). So, please try to make this meet if you can! If you know any older swimmers that could swim for Lexington that night, let us know so we can fill the lanes for Lexington! Also, other "big" meets are July 12 vs. Eureka and July 17 vs. Washington! Both of these teams have big rosters and we will need all the swimmers we can get!

Note - If your swimmer is attending the Lexington Invitational, please get together with Ginnie Hilt to sign up for one of the many volunteer jobs. We need each family to volunteer to make the Lexington Invitational a success!

Last, if you are true swimming fans, tune in to NBC or USA at 7:00 each night this week to watch the time trials or go to www.nbcolympics.com and watch the time trials during the day too! There are some fantastic swimmers and you can learn a lot by watching and listening! :)

El Paso Invitational Results

Lexington Lakers Swim Team receives 2nd place trophy!

The Lexington Lakers Swim Team won the 2nd place trophy on Saturday, June 21 at the 2008 El Paso Subway Invitational. Out of 9 teams, the Lakers received 2nd place behind the 1st place Greater Peoria Family YMCA Swim Team for the 3rd year in a row. Lexington brought 52 swimmers to the meet and had an outstanding day. This year's Invitational had a new 19 & Over category which Coach Clif Morlan swam in with lots of cheering from the younger Lexington swimmers. All swimmers finishing 1st - 3rd received medals and 4th - 10th received ribbons.

Three Lexington swimmers received a trophy for 1st place individual high points:
Lauren Boyd (Girls 8 & Under), Hannah Boyd (Girls 9-10), and Johnny Williamson (Boys 13-14). Connor Fiero received 3rd place for individual high points (Boys 13-14).

Two Lexington swimmers set 8 new records:
Girls 9-10: Hannah Boyd - 4 records in 50 Free (27.42), 25 Fly (14.06), 25 Back (15.56), and 100 IM (1:10.57)
Boys 13-14: Johnny Williamson - 4 records in 100 Free (50.4), 50 Free (23.26), 50 Fly (2478), and 100 IM (1:00.12)

El Paso Invitational 6/21

Hi everyone! An update about the El Paso Invitational...

Clif waited around after the meet on Saturday to collect everyone's ribbons and trophies. He learned that we got 4th place (after year's of 2nd's behind Greater Peoria Family YMCA). He said the margin between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th was around 7 points...like 567 El Paso, 564 Pontiac, 560 Lexington. But, then this morning I found this out...

Lexington got 2nd place at the El Paso Invite!!!

Apparently, El Paso accidentally scored two of the adult events which made the scores off. So, El Paso will bring the third place trophy to Pontiac at the Pentathlon and then Pontiac will give us the second place trophy at the Pentathlon. El Paso actually ended up in fourth.

Pontiac Pentathlon - 6/28

Hi! The Pontiac Pentathlon entries are due this Saturday! The Pontiac Pentathlon is another all day event similar to an invitational. Only 40 swimmers from each team attend and compete in 5 events (Fly, Back, IM, Breast, Free). Swim Team Update - 6/18

Hi! I wanted to let you know that Lexington DID WIN last night. The score was 699 - 633! The software didn't score the entire meet and when the meet results were printed off, we found the real score! Great job, Lakers!

Timing at a Home Swim Meet

Hi! Thanks to all of the parent volunteers that helped make today's swim meet a success! Great job Lakers!

Reminder - we have a swim meet at home on Tuesday vs. Roanoke. Warm-ups start at 5:30! The following swimmers are who I have listed as being absent: Ted, Hannah, Lauren, Kolten, Katie P, Kale, Tommy... Please let me know if you will be absent and are not on the list.

Also, at the last two meets, there have been some really close races which have had discrepancies in the stopwatch time and the lane judge's placement. I have put together some guidelines that will hopefully help to alleviate some of these problems. Please read and follow the guidelines below. Thanks!

Timing at a home swim meet:

• There are two timers per lane. You will be assigned one lane for the duration of the meet. One timer will be assigned to record the swimmer’s time on an index card clipped to a clipboard.
• Make sure your stopwatch is at 0.00. Listen for the Starter to start the race. Watch the starting system for the start of the race. There is a light that will flash and a beep that will sound when the race is started. Since light travels faster than sound, start your stopwatch as the light flashes. The Starters usually say “Swimmers take your mark!” Then the starting system will be activated.
• Check your stopwatch to make sure it started.
• As the swimmer approaches the end, stand as close to the pool’s edge as possible, and watch as the swimmer finishes his/her race. The race is finished when he/she touches the wall with ANY part of his/her body. This can be the head, hand, fingernail, etc.
• The moment the swimmer touches the wall, stop the stopwatch. It is even helpful to watch the wall being touched, rather than the hand touching the wall.
• Record both times on the index card. Write down both hand times even if they are the same. Do not round up or down the times (i.e. 48.10 and 1:00.74), write down all numbers. Do not circle any time. Scorekeepers take care of this. If you have any doubt that your time is accurate (e.g. if you are pretty sure that you were late in starting or that you missed the touch) don’t write down your time. Write NT (no time.)
• Check the Lane Judges positioned on the side of the pool for which lane has 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. Record this for your lane on the index card. If there is a discrepancy between the Lane Judges and Timers regarding a close race, talk to the timers in the other lane to compare which lane came in 1st. Sometimes the Lane Judges will see the race differently than what the stopwatch indicates.
• A Runner will pick up the cards and take them to the scoring table.
• Clear your stopwatch. You are now ready for the next race.
• Repeat.

Things to remind swimmers:

• Two-hand touch on the wall for breaststroke and butterfly.
• Don't dive off the block on a relay until the incoming swimmer touches the wall.
• IM = Fly, Back, Breast, Free
• Medley Relay = Back, Breast, Fly, Free

#1 - File Folders: Please have your swimmer check their file folder in the swim team box at the pool for your 2008 swim team packet. This packet contains lots of useful information (especially for first-time swimmers!) This is also where you will receive your ribbons and other sources of communication!

#6 - For Sale: Yard Signs and Car Decals. Mark Pritchard has personalized yard signs for the swimmers. The signs say Lexington Lakers with a picture of a swimmer, and your swimmer(s) names. The cost is $20 and these need to be ordered. There are also Lexington Lakers Swim Team Car Decals - white is $3 and purple is $5. These are in stock. Please contact Tammy if you want to purchase. I will have these at practices and meets.

#7 - Concession Sign-Ups: There will be a concession sign-up sheet coming soon - we need parents to donate food, drinks, snacks, treats, etc. for each home meet! Look for this to come soon!

The practice meet for tonight is CANCELLED because the lap pool is still not open. However, it appears that the problem was found and it should be open by this weekend! Our meet Thursday is IN GRIDLEY! Our meet Saturday is AT HOME as long as the pool is functioning!

El Paso Invitational 6/21

Hello! I just received information for the El Paso Invitational held on Saturday, 6/21. Sorry for the short notice, but the information was mailed to me on 6/4 and the deadline for entries is 6/13. So, I will need to know the following from each swimmer by Wednesday, 6/11 at 12:00!

1. Will your swimmer attend the meet?
You need to reply if you will NOT attend the meet. The Lexington Park District pays for each swimmer to swim and the cost is $16 for 4 events. If you do not let me know that you are not swimming or if you say you are swimming and do not show up, you will have to pay the $16 to the Park District.

2. Do you want to purchase a t-shirt for $10?
El Paso is offering meet t-shirts for a cost of $10 per swimmer. The Park District does not pay for this. You need to get a check made payable to El Paso Recreation for $10 by Wednesday, 6/11 at 12:00!

3. What time will you volunteer to time a lane? We need a total of 12 timers - 2 each hour:

Swim Team Practice on June 9

Unfortunately, Swim Team Practice will need to be altered the week of Monday, June 9 due to continued problem(s) opening the pool(s). We originally stated that swim team practice would be adjusted the week of VBS. However, right now the only pool to practice in is the small pool. We do not have access to the small pool from 12:00-1:00 since the pool opens at noon to the public. We need to readjust times until the lap pool is open. Please check your email each day to find out what time your practice is. Also, if you need to attend a different practice, please do so - no permission needed! We apologize for the inconsistency in swim practice times. Hopefully, the lap pool will open soon...

For the days that swim practice is in the small pool, please bring tennis shoes for dryland exercises and games.

Please Note:

• This year practice times will not be adjusted for other activities (summer camps, VBS, etc.). If your swimmer cannot make the scheduled time slot because of other commitments, they are welcome to swim at another time slot.
• Swimmers can move up time slots depending on work/improvement at any time. Talk to Clif or Katie prior to switching time slots.
• If you don't know which time slot your swimmer should be in, please talk to Clif or Katie.
• With three practices, each lane will have only 3-4 swimmers which will provide better instruction and more time doing strokework.

LEXINGTON LAKERS 2008 Swim Team Information

Fee: $35 per swimmer ($50-$15 donated from Lexington Jaycees)
Volunteer Deposit: $35 per swimmer (Check refunded after parent volunteers)

Lexington Lakers is a traveling competitive swim team with a schedule of 15 swim meets over 6 weeks (3 weeks in June and 3 weeks in July). The season ends on Saturday, July 19 with the 2nd Annual Lexington Invitational. To be a member of the swim team, participants must be able to swim a full length of the pool (25 yards) without stopping. The age group for each swimmer is based on their age as of June 1, 2008. Practices will begin the week of June 2, 2008 and are held every morning Monday through Friday (times t.bd.). Meets are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and some Saturdays.
